Former CHL and U SPORTS hockey player Jacob Winterton has sadly passed away at the age of 25 after a courageous battle with cancer, according to an announcement from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He previously played for the Flint Firebirds and the Oshawa Generals before continuing his career with the Guelph Gryphons men’s ice hockey. Jacob was also the older brother of Ryan Winterton.
The OHL expressed deep sorrow over his passing, extending heartfelt condolences to the Winterton family, as well as to Jacob’s friends, teammates, and all who knew him during this difficult time.
Ryan Winterton, 22, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram following his brother’s passing. He described Jacob not only as someone he loved deeply, but also as a role model who inspired, supported, and helped shape his life. He reflected on the pain of watching his brother fight so hard against illness, and the lasting impact Jacob’s love, guidance, and memories will continue to have on him.
Both brothers were born and raised in Ontario and followed similar hockey paths through the OHL. In 2024, Jacob fondly recalled a childhood moment when the two briefly played on the same team, sharing a memorable breakaway play that highlighted their close bond.
During his OHL career, Jacob recorded 18 goals and 37 points over 125 regular-season games with Flint and Oshawa. After the COVID-19 pandemic paused league play, he moved on to the University of Guelph, where he spent four seasons competing in U SPORTS while pursuing a degree in real estate. Over his university career, he tallied 27 goals and 43 assists in 100 games.
Off the ice, Jacob remained a devoted supporter of his younger brother, often traveling to attend Ryan’s games. He once humbly credited Ryan’s success to his own determination and strong work ethic, rather than his own influence.
The Winterton family is expected to release details regarding Jacob’s obituary, memorial service, funeral arrangements, and visitation in due course.
